Daisy the Tortoise

The story of Daisy the tortoise

In 2005 The Tortoise Shop's two founders Les White Snr and Les White Jnr put their heads together to think of a new, novel, and exciting way to keep tortoises indoors, which had to be aesthetically stimulating to the owner and yet at the same time functional, practical, and safe for the tortoises' accomodatory requirements.

Traditional tortoise tables and indoor wooden pens have been tried and tested with huge success over the years, but are also now quite common place. Vivaria, as we all know, are totally unsuitable because of their lack of ventilation due to having lids and glass doors fitted etc.

This new project had to be something different.

Eventually they came up with a brilliant, totally new, concept in tortoise house design....a tortoise !!!!

Careful planning and consideration was given to the tortoises' ventilation needs, so one half of the tortoise was decided to be left completely open to allow for maximum air flow.

A rotational spot lamp is fixed to the rear upper wall to provide the appropriate heating and lighting and a seperate floor pan would be completley detatchable to make cleaning out very simple and easy.

The project got underway. Designers, sculptors, and plastic manufacturers all had an input to make this vision become a reality.

Tragically though in November 2005 Les White Snr had a recurrance of cancer which he had fought bravely for almost 12 years. This time it was to be his last battle. On the 27th December 2005 he passed away before the project was finished.

Les was a very generous, caring, man who was always at his happiest when helping others, and in particular, had enormous enthusiasm for a charity named "The Daisy Appeal".

The Daisy appeal was launched by Professor Nick Stafford in September 2002 to raise funds for a state of the art medical research and teaching centre focussing on two of the Uk's biggest killers - cancer and heart disease.

Although the centre is based in East Yorkshire, it's pioneering work will have national benefits in cancer care and its treatment.

£6.5 million is the appeal target, £5.7 million of which has already been raised or pledged.

Les White Jnr, his family, and The Tortoise Shop staff,  thought it would be rather fitting to name the new tortoise housing unit "Daisy", and to contribute to the charity through donating a contributionfrom the sale of each Daisy house.

Les White Jnr officially retired from the The Tortoise Shop in Sepember 2007, handing the running of the business over to the current management, Mike ,Paul ,Janine and Terry

The Tortoise Shop will continue with the good work of the "the daisy appeal" by contributing £10 to the cause for every "Daisy" sold. This in addition to other fundraising events planned .

Only a limited amount of "Daisy the tortoises" are  manufactured and each Daisy the tortoise will have it's own unique serial number.

Upon near completion of the research centre being built we will draw one of the unique serial numbers out of a hat. The corresponding customer to whom the number matches will have a monumental engraved brick named after them which will be immortalised in part of the building's structure, as a thank you for contributing to such a worthy cause.
