To rectify the situation we have now launched the Advice Membership . The advice membership is designed for tortoise owners who purchase their tortoise eleswhere , but need help and advice .

NEW

Something new for the new year

We now have available a new all natural bedding.

Available in either coarse or fine and each bag is approx 20ltr. After use the bedding is nitrogen enriched with the tortoises droppings. It is now a valuable resource that canbe recycled as an organic soil conditioner for your garden .

We have tried this product out ourselves and we think it's great , low dust no smell and it can be reused in the garden . It ticks all our boxes :)

wakey wakey

Well the time has come to wake Oscar up !!!!

So I have set Oscars house up with new bedding etc and have tested that the lights are working .

However i don't put him straight into his house , I always find it easier to bring Oscar out of the fridge , give him half an hour in a warm room ( normally my kitchen ) this just starts to bring him round .

Next I give him a nice warm bath for about 10mins , I then pop him back in the outer hibernation box(once he's been dried off with a papertowel) with the shredded paper and place the box in a warm room near the radiator . Turn the lamps on in the tortoise table ( Oscar is in Daisy ) and let it warm up so he's got a lovely basking spot .

After about half an hour or so I can hear Oscar start to move around in the box and scratching at the sides ( well he does like to climb !) at this point I move him over to his house , once inside he gives me a little smile as if to say i'm back home !!!!!  .

I don't feed Oscar the same day he comes out of hibernation , but he does have some food the next day , I also keep up with the baths just so he can re-hydrate himself .

The Badger family is all back together again .

Tortoises for christmas

Wind down & Hibernation

Wind down

This is the process that i go through with my tortoise .

Oscar is 4 years old and very very cheeky !He's been fed on a natural diet , had lots of fun outside in the garden during the summer .Oscar will wind down for 2 weeks and then go in hibernation .So with that in mind I'm ready to start ......

Week one .(mon-sun)

Feeling very brave , i start the no food , oscar has his light on for 6 hours  and Bath time.I use a calendar to keep a note of the days and when he goes to toilet , it also tells my family that the wind down has started ,just in case some( my husband normally ) one tries to give Oscar food !!!!

So bathing daily , and doing well .Oscar is giving me the look !!!! " i want food " but i stuck to it :)

On Wednesday I have now reduced the basking time to 4 hours a day .

Saturday , I have noted on the calendar when oscar has been to toilet , and when i reduced the basking ( just helps for next year , see always planning ahead ) . Now thinking ahead to week two, I'm going to need Two boxes , soil , poly chippings/ shredded paper, elastic bands x2 and a screw driver ( to make holes in the box)  I now sound like i should be on Blue Peter :) .

Sunday , I've made it to the end of week one yipeee .

Week two coming up !!! i always find this one a little harder but it's for his own good .Hope this helps xox

Week 2

Well  week 2  is here :(

Oscar is now really sulking with me , no light and no food i have moved him into my dining room away from the radiator .But still having his daily baths .

Two days before he goes away i check the temperature in the fridge ...

Perfect 3dc so i'm happy I have dettoled the bottom salad crisper in the fridge ready for my little man .

Now the day has come for Oscar to start his little hibernation .Hes not pooed for 4 days now so hes gut is empty .Check :)

The small box that Oscar is going into i half fill with soil ( this stops him dehydrating ) , and i have put air holes in all 4 sides . I Bath Oscar , dry him off ( I know i'm sad ) ,and put him in the box and elastic band the lid on.

The outer box i add a small amount of shredded paper add air holes on all four side . Once i've done this i pop Oscar in the outer box and add just a little more shredded paper , then again elastic band the lid down .

Open the fridge put the box in the salad crisper , mark on the calendar the day Oscar has gone to ZZZZZZZZZ and then I write on the calendar the day hes coming out  Yipeeeeeeeee.

Hull Daily Mail

Featured in the Hull Daily Mail

IT IS among the few shops in the country dedicated to one of the oldest creatures on earth.

But many people in the city are unaware of the existence of The Tortoise Shop in Sutton Fields.

The Bergen Way store has been in Hull for more than ten years, selling captive bred tortoises, accessories and food.

But director Janine Badger said the shop was not well known in the city.

She said: "The majority of our customers are from further afield and a massive percentage of our business is online.

"People often don't realise where we are and travel from far and wide to pick up their tortoises.

"We have had a long distance lorry driver drive off a P&O ferry and come to pick up his tortoise before going back down south to his home.

"Another lady got a ferry over from the Isle Of Man before making her way to Hull."

The Tortoise Shop was originally owned by Les White and is now owned by Paul Train and Mike Holdstock.

It has three full-time members of staff – Natalie Collier, Terry Clappison and Janine Badger.

Accessories from the shop recently featured on The Alan Titchmarsh Show on ITV1.

Janine, who has been involved with The Tortoise Shop since the beginning, said: "We were delighted when the show got in touch with us.

"It has been tough recently for us, like for everyone else, but because we are so specialised and offer tortoises, accessories and advice we get a good customer base through word of mouth.

"People often get a tortoise and come back for another. They make fantastic pets.

"I think the thing that sets us apart is our accessories and our advice service.

"We opened The Tortoise Shop because we wanted to get the right advice about tortoises out to the public.

"We only sell UK-bred tortoises – good breeds to get people up and running.

"If somebody wants a small tortoise, for example, we point them in the direction of a Tunisian spur thigh turtle."

Alan Titchmarsh Show

Advice !!!!!!!

Well were disappointed with regards to the advice given on the show , even though we did send lots of information with he products , WHICH WAS NOT USED. Please remember that it's not a "one house fits all" situation, you  cannot house an african spur in a glass fronted house with high humidity !!!!!  the clue is in the name , they need dry heat so a tortoise table would be much better suited to this breed. IF you are wanting to use a Glass fronted house ( vivarium) then purchase a redfoot or yellow foot these originate in the rain forest so these are ideally suited to that type of set up . Sorry to say we did offer our service for advice but instead they went with an "expert who knew their stuff !!"

So if in doubt please please , just contact us either by telephone, email or facebook ,

FOR CORRECT INFORMATION !!
